David Gray / The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It – Radio 1 Live Lounge / Hot Fuzz

Save some face, you know you’ve only got one
Change your ways while you’re young
Boy, one day you’ll be a man
Oh girl, he’ll help you understand
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

Looking back at sunsets on the Eastside
We lost track of the time
Dreams aren’t what they used to be
Some things slide by so carelessly

Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

And someone is calling my name
From the back of the restaurant
And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in
And someone will drive her around
Down the same streets that I did
On the same streets that I did

Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

Oh no, oh no no no
Oh no, oh no no no

I had a bad evening yesterday. I felt crappy before I even went out, but when I got to the party only to hear a ton of gossip, I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. The last song I had heard before leaving the house was this one, the David Gray version although I love the Killers’ original equally. Donkey had put it on to give me a little boost — a great choice, and we sang along together as I put on my make-up and a bright, artificial smile. All evening I smiled like I meant it, even though inside I wanted to cry. Here in Taiwan, you have to save face above all things. I didn’t really mind that much, breaking up, but finding out that DD is enamoured, thrilled and ecstatic about my replacement… well.

Smiling like I meant it did pay off eventually, and I heard some new snippets which made me feel so much better about myself… in the end I had a good night, and came home to something else that made me grin — e-mail from S.
